Year 8 — Pre-Secondary Preparation

Year 9 — NCEA Foundation Year

Year 10 — Pre-NCEA Year
Final junior year. NZC Level 5. Students select subjects for NCEA. Some schools offer pre-NCEA credits. This is the most important gateway year before formal NCEA begins.

First formal NCEA year. Students earn credits through internal assessments (done during the year) and external exams (November). A minimum of 80 credits is required to achieve NCEA Level 1.

Students specialise further and choose 5–6 subjects. NCEA Level 2 requires 80 credits including at least 60 at Level 2 or above. This level is widely recognised by employers and polytechnics.
